ETHICS + SUSTAINABILITY

OUR VISION

Hazel + Folk is an Australian based slow fashion label. We create garments that can be worn year after year, pieced together in different ways, allowing you to create the maximum amount of looks, with minimal pieces- in turn, minimising excessive consumption and waste.
We make each design in very limited numbers, so nothing is mass-produced.

Soon we will be releasing a small collection of goods, with majority of proceeds going directly to charities close to our hearts.

 We also have some exciting partnerships happening… but you’ll hear more about that soon…x

CLOTHING

We work closely with artisans and makers in New Delhi India, who make our designs a reality. We are well aware of the negative social and environmental impacts the fashion industry can have, and we are forever striving to minimise our footprint and maximise our sustainability. There is always room for improvement, and we are constantly making changes to do so. 
We are in close contact with our manufacturer, communicating almost daily, as well as visiting them in person in India throughout the year.
Our manufacturer follows ethical trade practices, emphasising on the safety, health + well being, and general working conditions of their team.
It is their priority to ensure employees have a safe work environment, and are paid sustainable living wages. In addition to respecting all local labour and environmental laws, our manufacturers are committed to upholding the principles of ethical working practice’s as laid out by the International Labour Organisation of the United Nations, following guidelines as listed below:
No force or obligatory labour + No child labour
No forced labour is tolerated; this includes threats by penalties or punishment. Staff members perform their duties voluntarily with the option of overtime for additional payment.
They believe in the right of children to live, learn and grow without work and employment. They do not employ anyone below the age of 18 years, and always maintain on record proof of age for all employees. All vendors / contractors suppliers need to follow the same values. All vendors / suppliers / contractors have to undertake in writing that they do not and will not employ anyone below the age of 18 years.

Our manufacturers practice and are committed to provide equal opportunities for hiring, wages, and benefits, promotions based solely on the ability to perform the job function. Respect for the Environment
They strictly comply with all local environmental laws and operate with a caring and responsible attitude towards the environment. They have effective waste disposal procedures and work to be innovative to ensure that any waste generated during the making processes is recycled, or is used as inputs in other processes.
Compliance with the Laws + Regulations
They are committed to comply with all relevant local and international laws. They have a zero tolerance policy towards bribery and extortion and are committed to being an ethical clothing manufacturer.
Employee Health + Safety
Occupational health and safety practices are closely monitored, and a hygienic and safe working environment is provided. Necessary training and regulations are put in place in order to minimise any potential health hazards or injury.
Harassment + Abuse
Regulations are in place to ensure that harassment and abuse of any kind; including physical, verbal, psychological and sexual will not be tolerated in the workplace. Employees are to be treated with respect and dignity at all times.
Wages + Working Hours
They will always endeavour to have all wages and dues paid in a timely and orderly manner. Wages will comply with all local laws and they will always conform to the principle of fair and honest dealings.
Work hours are based on those approved by domestic laws, and overtime is consensual.

JEWELS + BAGS

Most of our jewellery is made from recycled materials or is authentic vintage tribal jewellery, some pieces dating up to seventy years old. We hand finish all our Vintage Jewellery pieces here in Australia.
Our bespoke range of bags and clutches are either designed by us exclusively for Hazel + Folk, or are hand selected from small family businesses in India and Morocco. These pieces are often made up of 90% recycled materials, such as vintage Sabra rugs, Banjara Tribe embroidery, or vintage wedding blankets. Each piece is hand made with love, has little imperfections, and tells a story.

HOMEWARES 

Our homewares are sustainably sourced from different regions in India. Each piece is hand made using various traditional methods and materials.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? 

- Hand wash your garments in cold water. It is better for the environment and will prolong the life of the garment.
- Use gentle plant based detergents when washing your garments.
- Do not use a clothes dryer, air-dry your clothes flat in the shade to prevent colour fading and stretching of delicate pieces.
- Recycle our calico gift bags to store and transport your Hazel + Folk pieces.
- Only buy pieces you know you’ll wear to death! We don’t want to see more waste (or our designs!) ending up in landfill.
